Eating Disorders and COVID-19: Holiday Coping Skills

Eating Disorders, COVID-19 and the Holidays – OH MY! 2020 has been a difficult year for all of us, and especially for those in recovery from eating disorders. Eating disorders happen in isolation, and recovery happens in connection with others. So, what happens to those in recovery from eating disorders, when we are supposed to avoid travel and not gather together? A variety of emotions can surface, I find that I’m using a specific Eating Disorder Intuitive Therapy (EDIT)™ worksheet with most of my clients (see below).

Many of my clients in recovery from eating disorders are expressing emotions such as anxiety, depression, frustration, sadness, grief, irritability – to name a few! There are specific aspects of relief which eating disorder behaviors can provide. For example, when feeling stressed, eating can offer a calming effect. Binge eating can increase that effect, at least initially. Then, feelings of guilt and shame can ensue, which can lead to purging behaviors for some people with eating disorders. When emotions feel out of control, other people dealing with eating disorders may find themselves attempting to feel in control through restrictive eating, meal skipping, or fasting.

All of these emotions can be exacerbated for people with eating disorders, as they attempt to cope with the Holidays and COVID-19 restrictions. What specific emotions are people with eating disorders feeling? What purpose are the eating disorder behaviors serving? What alternatives to the eating disorder behaviors can be considered, as a means of meeting ones true needs?

As people with eating disorders cope with COVID-19 during the Holidays, this worksheets is an excellent resource. You can click on the worksheet below, to view and print. This EDIT™ Worksheet has tips to help your clients better manage their emotions and access their true needs, instead of using eating disorder behaviors as a means of coping.

How to Set Healthy Intentions for the New Year

As 2019 is coming to a close, many of you may be thinking ahead to what you’d like your life to be like in 2020. Here are a few tips as you transition from the past into the future:

Remember to Let Go of the Past – As Joel Osteen shared in a show that was recorded at the end of 2018 (which was recently re-broadcast), “Kiss the Past Goodbye!” You don’t want to move into 2020 holding onto unhelpful thoughts, feelings, or behaviors. Nor do you was to cling to anything that has been “weighing you down.” Pause for a moment to reflect about the things from your past that you’d like to release, and imagine how FREE you will feel entering 2020!

Differentiate Between Resolutions and Intentions – Resolutions are usually set based on an “ideal,” with goals that may not be attainable. For example, the most common resolution is to “lose weight.” The goal might be to “lose 25 pounds.” I jokingly tell my clients who get caught up in the false promises of the multi-billion dollar diet industry, that they can lose 25 pounds if they amputate a leg! They chuckle, and understand what I’m getting at – it’s not weight loss that you really want, it’s what you think weight loss will bring you: improved health, ease of movement, feeling more confident. What would happen if you made these three items your Intentions, and then open to the many way you can move towards this, instead of forcing yourself to diet (which leads to binge eating), compulsive exercise (which leads to injury), and then giving up on your Resolution (most people give in within 2 weeks)!

There Are No Limits to Your 2020 Vision – What would you do if you knew you could not fail? Remember the second point, and think beyond the number on the scale. Imagine what Perfect Health feels like, and the new thoughts and behaviors that go along with it. Imagine other areas of your life, where you’d like to open to your full potential – your Relationships, your Career, your other Values.

Below is a handout that I use in training people who become certified in my method of Eating Disorder Intuitive Therapy (EDIT)™ – by the way, if you’re interested to help others overcome eating disorders, now is a great time to enroll in the EDIT™ Training, since you’ll receive up to $200 OFF certification thru 1/10/20. Whether you’re a Clinician, Health Coach, or just a friend or family member who is struggling, there are certification options for you! LEARN MORE

Eating Disorder Recovery Tips for Food Holidays

From Halloween to Thanksgiving to Holiday Parties into the New Year – food seems to be everywhere. Here are a few strategies to help your clients (or yourself) to find balance with emotions and eating. This can help overcome the temptation to binge (and then possibly purge), or to engage is restrictive behaviors which result in feelings of deprivation (and then possibly a binge/purge). Try these EDIT™ Skills to break the ED cycle, and enjoy this Holiday Season:

Trust Your Intuition with Food Choices – Get in touch with the foods you truly love. I mean, LOVE. Is it really the Halloween on every corner display in the grocery store? Or, Aunt Martha’s fruit cake that you feel obligated to eat to please her? Or, those store-baked cookies someone brought to the Holiday Office Party? Think back to your own pleasant memories of this time of year. Maybe you really LOVE apples dipped in caramel, or the turkey stuffing the your Nana used to make, or your Grandma’s shortbread cookies. Make your own list of “favorite foods,” and see if you can focus on these as your food choices. When you’re shopping specifically for apples and caramel, it’s easy to overlook all the candy. When you’re bringing your Nana’s stuffing to the family gathering, maybe you can say to Aunt Martha as she passes the fruitcake, “No, thanks, I’m stuffed!” (Yes, pun intended). And, at the Holiday Party, people will be asking, “Who baked these cookies? I want the recipe!” I hope this strategy helps you to focus more on enjoying the foods you love, while connecting more with others.

Check In with Your Feelings Often – Notice the sensations in your body, as well as your predominant emotions. Be curious about a possible link between your emotions and your body sensations. Rate these sensations on a scale from 1 to 10, and if they seem very intense (a 9 or 10), pause to a coping skill to bring the intensity down to a manageable level (a 4 or 5. Consider using the EDIT™ Worksheet (at end of article) to help you develop ways to meet your specific needs. Take a photo of the completed worksheet, so if you are feeling emotionally vulnerable before a holiday event, you can pull out your phone for a quick reminder about emotional balance. This is an effective way to avoid using ED behaviors to cope.

Give the Gift of Self-Care – Yes, to your Self! This is a busy time of year, and much of the focus can be about, “What costume should I make for my daughter? What is the best gift for my boss? What present should I get my nephew, Jimmy?” All of this, on top of the regular responsibilities of everyday life. Be sure to beep recovery as your #1 priority, and reflect about simple Self-Care you can enjoy every day – perhaps a 5-minute morning meditation, pausing for a cup of tea in the afternoon, or buying yourself a gift (and wrapping it)!

Eating Disorders Holiday Help: Dealing with Triggers

‘Tis the season – for family gatherings, Holiday parties… and lots of food. It can be enough of a challenge to stay on course with your eating disorder recovery in your day-to-day life. It’s even more challenging when you’re triggered by your Aunt Mary’s comments about your weight, or your Grandmother’s pumpkin pie. Here are a few strategies for eating disorders help for the holidays:

Know Your Triggers – Identify the people, places and events that are the most challenging for you to deal with. By acknowledging that your Aunt Mary always makes a comment about your weight, you can actually be less triggered when she makes a comment this year. She might say, “You look so good – how much weight have you lost?” Or, “What happened – you gained so much weight since the last time I saw you!” Knowing that she will make some kind of comment, you can be prepared and therefore less triggered. Similarly, knowing that you are going to a family function where you will encounter foods which can trigger your eating disorder behaviors, you can diffuse the power of the trigger simply by being aware of it. You know that your Grandmother will bring pumpkin pie – and you also know that she will push you to have a piece. You also know that she’ll give you a “sad look” if you decline to have a piece, and she’ll push you to have seconds if you agree to have one.

Have a Plan to Deal with Your Triggers – After you have identified some of the main triggers you might encounter, come up with specific action steps for each. When your Aunt Mary makes a comment about your weight, you might plan to say, “Let’s not focus on my weight. Let’s talk about the art class I am taking!” You can shift the conversation onto a topic that you enjoy talking about. As for the pumpkin pie, you might say ,”Grandma, you know that I love your pie! But this year, I’d only like one very small piece, and that’s it!” You can choose the boundary that feels right to you.

Follow-Up with Self-Care – After encountering people, places or events that were triggering, it’s a good idea to enjoy some extra Self-Care! Make a list of Self-Care ideas, and after your family event or party, scan your list and choose something that will help you feel “nourished from within.” For example, your list might include: Call my friend Suzy, take a walk with my dog, get a massage, go see a movie, write in my journal, listen to my favorite music, read my gratitude list, go to a support group.

10 Steps to Stop Binge Eating and Make Peace with Food

Trick or Treat? If you struggle with Binge Eating Disorder or Food Addiction, then Halloween can be a tricky time of year. You have to pass by all of those bags of candy in the aisles at the store, and you have to overcome the urge to buy several bags of candy “for trick-or-treaters.” Who would know all of that candy was just binge food for you?

Tricky Treats. Perhaps you actually do buy candy with the real intention to give it to the children who come by your home on Halloween. What do you do with the candy until that night? Do you hide it, so it’s out of sight, and hopefully out of mind? Do you wait until the day of Halloween to buy the candy, so that it’s not around, tempting you? Even if you wait until that day, how do you keep your own hand out of the candy bowl that night?

It’s Such a Trick. People with Binge Eating Disorder and Food Addiction often have to work very hard to fight off cravings for sweets. It’s a game of all-or-nothing — where many people with eating disorders can’t stop eating binge foods once they start, so they try to abstain from any trigger foods. But doesn’t this leave you feeling deprived? Don’t you wish you could have a few pieces of candy and stop?

It Can Be a Treat. What would happen if you really could have 3 or 4 mini-packets of candy, without binge eating? Here’s how you can make peace with Halloween candy. Try these steps for sweet success:

Carefully choose 3 or 4 small pieces of candy — select a few of your favorites!

Set them aside, and notice your thoughts and feelings as you anticipate eating the candy

Use an affirmation, “Food has no power over me. I am making peace with food.”

Plan a time when you won’t feel rushed or distracted to enjoy your candy

Invite a friend to have some treats with you, if you’d like extra support in this process

Try the “Beginners Mind” technique as you sample your first piece — tap into all of your senses

Notice how the candy looks, smells, and feels in your hand before you put it in your mouth

Lick the candy, and notice how it tastes — taste as if you are having this item for the first time

As you put the candy in your mouth, notice how it feels as it melts, and as you swallow

Notice your thoughts and feelings, and proceed in a similar way with your other 2 or 3 pieces

Trick into Treat! You can stop binge eating and make peace with food!

– Dr. Dorie

Eating disorders and stress tend to “feed each other.” Let’s be honest about that. This is often a triggering and stressful time of year; the holidays are rapidly approaching, the change in seasons can be tough, and it’s getting dark earlier. This particular year may be even more stressful due to the recent election, no matter what your political affiliation may be. It is very important that we pay attention to stress and try to prevent it from becoming too overwhelming. DBT can help you!

DBT stands for Dialectical Behavior Therapy. The word “dialectical” is defined as, “concerned with or acting through opposing forces.” This can mean that there are often two truths, or more than one truth in any given situation. If you live in Colorado you may have noticed that in mid- November the temperature was in the 70s! The holiday season can often bring on a dialectical feel: on one hand it is a time of togetherness and celebration, on the other hand it can feel isolating or lonely. There are mixed messages around food and holiday eating, too. We are surrounded with sweets and other decadent foods, yet our culture expects us to “be healthy.” This all adds to eating disorders and stress.

Using the Distress Tolerance and Mindfulness modules of DBT can be very effective for combatting eating disorders and stress. If you need immediate relief and want to improve a moment follow these steps. Think of the acronym IMPROVE to help guide you.

I: Use IMAGERY. You can do this by imagining a relaxing scene – either a place you have been, or create a beautiful scene in your mind and take yourself there mentally. You can also try to remember a happy time or memory and think of it fondly. Also, you can picture any hurtful or painful emotion draining out of you like water out of a pipe.

M: Find MEANING. Try to find a purpose in a painful or stressful situation, make meaning of what’s happening in the here and now. For example, “I cannot afford to fly somewhere to be with family for the holidays and this is stressful. I can find meaning in this by knowing I can create my own holiday here alone or with friends and do something to honor myself during those days. I’ll have more time to relax and traveling during the holidays can be stressful anyway!” Focus on all the positive aspects or positive reframes that you can think of – write them down.

P: PRAISE for yourself. Make a list in your mind or write it down of all the things you love or life about yourself or your life. Examples include, “I love my cat,” “I love my hair,” “I am grateful for my family,” or, “I am grateful for my health.”

R: RELAXATION. Take a hot shower or bath with nice smelling products that help you relax. Try adding lavender oil to your bath water or using pleasant smelling lotions when you are done. Breathe deeply. This is one you can do at any time of day no matter where you are or who you are with. Massage your neck and scalp. You can reach these spots and just a few moments of energy spent can relieve unnecessary tension. Change your facial expression. Even if you don’t feel like smiling, try it for 10 seconds. Practice right now as you are reading this. Even a few seconds of smiling changes your outlook, how others may see you and can create positivity around you.

O: Focus on ONE thing in each moment. Practice focusing on one thing at a time give your entire attention to what you are doing in the present moment. Let go of other distractions. You can focus in your physical body, too. Notice any stress in your body. Pay attention to your five senses. Breathe.

V: VACATION. This can be brief, or extended. You could turn off your phone for a day. Take a walk on your lunch break. Sit outside in the park. Go for a drive. Get into the mountains. Go for a hike. Plan a future vacation when you can take a few days off.

E: Self-ENCOURAGEMENT and rethinking the situation. Try statements like, “I will get through this,” “This too shall pass,” “Everything happens for a reason, ” “This will only make me stronger,” “I will be ok no matter what,” or, “Yay me!” You can make up your own self encouragement statement. The bottom line is that you are resilient and self-reliant. You’ve got this!

Remember that you CAN get a handle on your eating disorder and stress, and if you follow the steps above you will be on a path for a more peaceful existence. Take care of you and your needs. Do nice things for yourself and remember that you are number one.

The holiday season can flare up remembrance of past trauma. Perhaps it is reminders of loved ones who have created the trauma, being around non-supportive folks or maybe even how traumatic experiences occurred right around the holidays. So how then, can we wrap up trauma with a pretty little bow?

Being able to wrap up or contain our trauma from affecting our daily lives is a difficult task. Here are a few ideas for how to start the process:

Grounding

Coping Toolbox

Self-Care

Grounding is a way to put you back in the present moment. This tool is helpful when experiencing flashbacks, if you start to drift off or disassociate, and to serve as a reminder that you are safe in this exact moment. To “ground” yourself, you can begin by using your five senses (i.e. sight, touch, smell, taste, hear). Using these senses, you are not only able to slow down your racing thoughts but also become reconnected with your body. When you are not grounded, the traumatic event(s) can hijack your thoughts, emotions and body. You are taken right back to that moment in time where you felt scared, powerless or stuck. Another method to grounding can be as simple as tapping your fingers on your knees or shoulders and saying “In this moment, I am safe.”

A coping toolbox can also be extremely helpful to ground you and to create calm in a time of distress. Your tools can help with breathing, the release of the physiological parts of trauma and help you outside of traditional therapy sessions.

Bubbles: Target and the dollar store have small containers that are inconspicuous with the ability to fit into a backpack or purse. Bubbles force us to slow down our breathing in order to create a bubble. You can take them into the restroom at a relative’s house or even into a restaurant restroom stall. Nobody will ever know you are having difficulty in that moment.

Play dough or silly putty: Both help engage you in a tactile experience that produces sensations bringing you into the present moment.

A box of mints or tic-tacs: These can help engage all five senses. Taking the time to explore the sight, smell, taste, touch and even sound (whether in their box or in your mouth as you crunch your last bite).

Your tools can be multipurpose as they serve to provide self-soothing, distraction or perhaps company while you overcome powerful emotions. These tools should be easily accessible and things that you feel comfortable with turning to for some relief.

Self-care in the context of this post is to suggest offering yourself compassion or grace with the process of healing from trauma. The road toward healing can be arduous, but you are a resilient human being who has survived trauma. Having this trauma can be a gift that comes with a pretty bow on top if you are willing to explore it, accept it (different from approving of it) and work through it. You are in control of your trauma now.

*Disclaimer: These tools are not a substitute to traditional therapy but rather as adjunct options.

Making Peace With Food During the Holidays

Cheesecake and poundcake and fruitcake, oh my! It can be challenging to be surrounded by so much food during the Holidays. You might tell yourself you just won’t have any of those sweet treats you really like… only to find yourself obsessing about eating them, and then ultimately binge eating and possibly purging. What would it be like to make peace with food this year during the Holidays? Binge eating help is here! Try these Eating Disorder Intuitive Therapy (EDIT)™ strategies at the next Holiday Buffet or Family Gathering you attend:

1. Check in with your hunger. Your body’s unique hunger signals are a direct link to your intuitive wisdom. When you pause to align with your hunger, you can work with your body to overcome anorexic avoidance or binge behaviors. How hungry are you right now? What subtle signs indicate you are feeling hungry? What specific food would best satisfy your hunger? Is that specific food available at the buffet or party you’re attending? If not, what can you substitute to adequately address your body’s need for specific nutrients? Do you have a snack with you which you could enjoy instead?

2. Check in with your desire. The sight and smell of food can trigger a desire to eat. These desires for food can feel confusing and sometimes overwhelming. When you pause to notice your various desires for food, you can clarify your true desires and eat intuitively rather than impulsively. What specific foods do you have a desire to eat right now? Are there some which have more appeal than others? If you could only choose one specific food, which would you select? How much of that food do you need to satisfy your desire? Would you rather have a few bites of several different foods?

3. Check in with your emotion. Eating disorder behaviors can be a way to avoid feeling intense emotions, so it’s not so much what you’re eating as what’s eating you. When you pause to notice what you are feeling and why you are feeling this way, you can begin to address your true needs (which may or may not be for food). What are you feeling right now? Can you identify a primary emotion — glad, sad, mad? Can you describe what you are feeling in more detail, noting its intensity and where you feel it in your body? What message does this emotion have for you — and does it involve eating?

Recovery is about reconnecting with your Intuitive Wisdom regarding what, how and why you eat — you can make peace with food!
